Introduction to Nearpod

Nearpod is an online presentation and polling application, which allows users to upload existing presentations (e.g. PowerPoint) as well as create new ones from scratch. Nearpod provides the ability to add interactive features such as quiz questions, polling, drawing questions and many more.

Teachers can share their presentations with students by providing the presentation ‘Pin’ for the session using computers or mobile devices.

What devices are compatible with Nearpod?

Nearpod is compatible with most iOS devices including iPod, iPhone and iPad running iOS 5 or higher, but we strongly recommend to update your device to the latest iOS and ensure you have the latest Nearpod app installed on your device.

Nearpod officially supports the following devices on the Android platform: Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″ and 10″, Nexus 7″ and 10″, and Nook HD. On devices with screens smaller than 7″ Nearpod will only run the Student view.

For desktops, laptops and Android devices not currently supported by the Android app, use a web browser such as Chrome or Firefox (Internet Explorer is not supported) and go to nearpod.com/web.

How to set up a Nearpod account.

If you have an account already, log into Nearpod. If not, please go to http://nearpod.com/signup and then fill out the form and click on ‘Sign Up’.

NOTE: Students will not need a separate account or login credentials to access your presentations. You will share with them a unique PIN for your session.

How to create a Nearpod presentation.

  1. Click on the ‘Create’ button on the main menu
  2. You can simply drag and drop your existing PowerPoint presentation or create a presentation from scratch by clicking on Add Slide > Add Content > Slide

How to add content to your presentation.

  1. Login to your Nearpod account
  2. Click on ‘Create’ button on the Home main menu
  3. If you wish to add content to one of your existing published presentations, go to ‘My Library’ from the Home main menu, hover your mouse over your your presentation, click ‘Edit’ and then click on ‘OK’ to confirm that you want to unpublish your presentation
  4. Click on ‘Add Slide’
  5. Click on ‘Add Content’
  6. Choose the content you wish to add
  7. You can re-arrange the slides, but remember that the first and last slides must be static, non-interactive slides.
  8. Publish your presentation

Note: Field Trip, PDF viewer, Live Twitter stream and embedding YouTube video are premium features available only to Gold and School users, although Silver/Free users can try it for a limited time.

What type of files can you upload to your Nearpod Presentation?

Nearpod accepts PDF, PPT, PNG and JPG for slides and reference images. Image files in any other formats can be saves in any of the aforementioned formats before uploading into Nearpod. Videos can be MP4, MOV, FLV, OGV, AVI or MPG. Audio files can be MP3, WAV, AIFF, OGG and AAC.

How to add activities to your presentation.

  1. Login to your Nearpod account
  2. Click on ‘Create’ button on the Home main menu
  3. If you wish to add activities to one of your existing published presentations, go to ‘My Library’ from the Home main menu, hover your mouse over your your presentation, click ‘Edit’ and then click on ‘OK’ to confirm that you want to unpublish your presentation
  4. Click on ‘Add Slide’
  5. Click on ‘Add Activity’
  6. Choose the Activity you wish to add
  7. You can re-arrange the slides, but remember that the first and last slides must be static, non-interactive slides.
  8. Publish your presentation

Open ended question: Quick way to get real time checking for understanding….[more]
Poll: Survey your audience and reveal poll results in real time. There is no option for correct/incorrect answers…[more]
Quiz: Provide a series of test questions for participants to answer at their own pace and track their progress…[more]
Draw it: Have students draw over a blank canvas or over an image. Choose which ones to share with the group…[more]

Memory Test/Matching Pairs: You create 6, 8, or 12 pairs that match with each other. You can include images on the pairs as well…[more]
TIP: Look for the settings icon to add even more customisation to your interactive features. Example: You can add a reference image for question or have short answer responses instead of multiple choice questions.
TIP: The Draw It feature has great potential across all curricula. Examples include: annotating over a passage, drawing/labelling a map, solving a maths problem, balancing chemical equations, and more.

How to add web content to your presentation.

The web content feature allows you to add websites to your presentation to share with your students so they can navigate at their own pace.

  1. Login to your Nearpod account
  2. Click on ‘Create’ button on the Home main menu
  3. If you wish to add web content to one of your existing published presentations, go to ‘My Library’ from the Home main menu, hover your mouse over your your presentation, click ‘Edit’ and then click on ‘OK’ to confirm that you want to unpublish your presentation
  4. Click on ‘Add Slide’
  5. Click on ‘Add web content’
  6. Type a URL to share a website so that your students can navigate at their own pace.
  7. Click ‘Save’, your slide will automatically appear in your presentation. To rearrange your slides, simply drag & drop each slide to where you would like it to appear…[more]

How to publish your presentation.

In order to share your presentation with your students, you will need to publish your presentation and make it live. There are several ways to publish your presentation, below is one of the methods:

  1. Login to your Nearpod account
  2. You should automatically be taken to ‘My Library’
  3. Click once on your presentation you wish to publish and then hover the mouse over the publish icon
  4. Click on ‘Publish’ icon
  5. You will be asked to choose a grade and subject for your presentation
  6. Click on ‘Publish’ and wait until your presentation is published…[more]

How to access Nearpod reports.

Once you have finished a presentation, you can choose to receive a report via an email by clicking on the Nearpod logo on the top and then ‘Reports.

You can also choose a session or search for a session that you wish to analyse data from

  1. Login to your Nearpod account
  2. Click on the ‘Home’ button on the top left
  3. Click on ‘Reports’
  4. You will see a list of all your published presentations. Select the name and date of the presentation for which you wish to generate a report or you can click on the search icon and search for your session
  5. Select the assessment you would like to access
