Moodle (Student Guide)

Moodle is our virtual learning environment (VLE). Our Moodle guides will walk you through the need to know areas of the tool. If you can’t find what you need, please contact the Moodle helpdesk (see our contact details in the footer of the guidance)

Moodle provides a space where lecturers and students can communicate with each other when not in a physical classroom. All university courses have a presence on Moodle.

A typical course will contain lecture materials; resource and reading lists; links to external resources such as articles, websites, and videos; and activities such as assignments, self tests, and discussion forums.

If you do not have access to the modules you require please check the Can’t See Your Modules page under the Dashboard for more information. How do I navigate in Moodle?

Click on the links to open new pages or files. You can use the menus at the top of your module page to navigate to different sections of Moodle. The Your modules shows you all the other modules you are enrolled on and the This module menu links to the other students and staff on the module, your module calendar (this does not include timetabling data) as well as quick links to all the sections on the page. As you move through Moodle you will notice a breadcrumb trail appear which can be used to navigate your way back to other parts of Moodle.

You will also see blocks on the right side of your module. These should include important updates, support block with useful links relating to your teaching and learning as well as other blocks that are chosen by your lecturer for instance, if your lecturer is using lecture capture and/or live streaming then a ReCap block will display on the right side of the screen.

The Moodle footer

Don’t forget the Moodle footer at the bottom of the Moodle page as it will take you to lots of very useful University links such as external sites for ReCap and ePortfolios as well this guidance site for Moodle, Collaborate and other supported educational technologies.

How are my module pages organised?

Your modules will usually be split into two columns with the main column offering resources and activities within sections organised either by topic or week. You may need to click on each section title/header to view the information within that section.

Communication Tools - Messaging, Notifications, Announcements and Quickmail

Moodle provides a range of options for communicating these include:

  • The Announcements forum – Only lecturers and administrators can post in this forum so it is a one-way communication as students cannot leave replies to the posts. Teachers may use this tool to announce exam dates and times; changes to exams, lectures or seminars; important information about coursework; and special announcements related to events.
  • Standard forums – Your lecturers may use other forums for informal discussion, to ask questions or set icebreaker activities within the module. These forums will allow students to post and reply to messages.
  • Quickmail – Students will receive Quickmail messages via a normal email in your inbox. You can then reply directly to the sender if the sender’s address is available.
  • Notifications – All users can decide how they want to be notified of new messages. Click on preference via the user profile menu in the top right corner of the page and click on message preferences. You can then choose if you want to be contacted by just those people in your contact list or by everyone on your modules.

Assessments - Turnitin, Moodle Assignments, Video submissions with Kaltura

Assessment information including how to submit via Turnitin (including Peermark Assessment), Moodle assignments (including group assignments) and video assignment through Kaltura can be found in the assessments section
