Turnitin

Turnitin is on online text-matching software. It produces a similarity report that has the potential to assist in possible cases of plagiarism and can be submitted as part of the evidence in an academic misconduct panel. Turnitin can also be used to assist students to understand how to correctly quote sources. The tool works by providing a similarity report on text matches. Turnitin also provides an excellent online marking and feedback tool called Feedback Studio which provides, frequently used comments, rubrics and inline comments as well as overall feedback comments.

Purpose of the Turnitin Similarity Report and full guide

Turnitin provides an originality report when students submit their assignment. The report is used to identify instances of matched text across a wide range of online materials including journals, ebooks, websites and work submitted to the Turnitin database i.e. submissions from other Universities as well as Roehampton. The originality report is available to;

  •  Assist students in understanding best practice when it comes to correctly referencing work
  •  Assist staff in identifying where plagiarism might have taken place. It is important to note that Turnitin does not detect plagiarism. It detects instances of matched text. A paper that displays a high percentage of matches can in some instances be entirely free from plagiarised content
