• Updates for 2018-19

We have updated our most popular guides for Moodle 2018-19. The remaining guides will be updated throughout the summer.

Adding a video to moodle/embedding & deleting

These instructions will allow you to add a video from a streaming site such as YouTube or Vimeo.

Uploading your own video

Moodle has a 40MB file limit, so you cannot upload most videos. We recommend that you set up a free YouTube account instead.

The YouTube help guides explain how to upload a video using different devices. Don’t forget to set appropriate privacy settings.

Linking to a video so it will play in a separate tab or window
Embedding a video on your Moodle page

  1. Add a label to the page.
  2. In the text box, click on the Toolbar Toggle button (1st button on the left)
  3. Then click on the <> HTML button (bottom row)
  4. In another tab or window, go to the site where your video is and find the embed code.
    1. YouTube: Embed videos and playlists
    2. Vimeo: Embedding videos on Vimeo
    3. NB Ensure that your video is responsive and automatically resizes on mobile or tablet. You will need to make a few tweaks to your embed code.
    4. For other video streaming sites, simply do a google search for the site name plus “embed code” and you should find instructions.
  5. Once you have copied the embed code, come back to the Moodle tab and paste the code into the text box.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and click the save button.

Deleting an embedded video

If you have an embedded a video from YouTube, or Vimeo, or some other video streaming service on your module site homepage, (or a Label, or a Page, or a Forum post, etc.), that you would like to remove, do the following:

  1. Login to external Moodle and go into your module site
  2. Turn editing on
  3. Select Edit settings from the Edit dropdown menu beside your label/page/other activity or resource
    • Note: if it’s a Forum post – open the post and click on the Edit link.
  4. In the Description text box, click on the Toolbar Toggle button (1st button on the left)
  5. Then click on the <> HTML button (bottom row)
  6. The text box will switch to HTML code. Look for <iframe> and </iframe> and highlight <iframe> and everything in between and including </iframe>. Then hit the Delete key on your keyboard.
    • Note: if you have several videos and need to identify the particular video you want remove, count the <iframe> and </iframe> pairs. E.g. If you want to delete the 4th video of 6 displayed one by one vertically, find the 4th pair and delete them and everything in between.
  7. Scroll to the bottom and click the save button.
